05.1 · Displays produce light they do not reveal truth
A display isn't a window onto reality. It is an image-making system with limits, biases, and environmental dependencies.
People often talk about screens as if the display's the final neutral judge in the room. It's not. An LED wall, projector, reference monitor, laptop, and phone are each generating their own version of the image within their own constraints.
Displays make pictures by emitting light. That seems obvious, but it's easy to miss the operational consequence: every display defines its own conditions for brightness, contrast, white, black, color volume, and viewing behavior.
So a display can:
- • look vivid while being wrong relative to another target
- • look washed out because the room is bright rather than because the content is bad
- • look matched at center and drift at angle
- • hold brand color differently than a laptop preview
The display isn't lying maliciously. It's just being a device.
- • They assume one “good” display tells them what everything else will look like
- • They treat calibration as a permanent cure instead of a managed condition
- • They forget environment is part of display performance
- • They confuse brightness with fidelity
An LED wall can feel strong in the room and still interact badly with cameras. A projection screen can feel acceptable in rehearsal and collapse once audience light and practicals change the room. A confidence monitor can reassure the operator while the program feed looks different elsewhere. Different displays aren't agreeing or disagreeing morally. They're exposing different limits.
List four display surfaces from a typical show:

- • confidence monitor
- • laptop
For each one, write one reason it may drift away from the others even if the source asset never changes.
